Title: American Express Company stock certificate, signed by William Fargo, John Butterfield and Alex Holland Author: ** Place: New York Publisher: Printed by Baker and Duyckinck Date: 1856 Description: Ten shares (at $100 per share). 6¾x10¾" pictorial engraved and lettered stock certificate issued for Abijah W. Chapin (of Springfield, MA), September 16, 1856. With original accompanying printed & handwritten document signed by Chapin and a witness (attached to stock with small nail); and original docketed envelope. Signed by the Secretary (Fargo), President (Butterfield) and Treasurer (Holland). In 1850, Wells & Company joined with two other express companies to form the American Express Company which covered the eastern sector of the United States, with the western sector being covered by Wells, Fargo and Company. Lot Amendments Condition: Old folds, light soiling, some of the ink a bit faded; else very good or better. Item number: 188629
