Beschreibung:

(American Civil War) 1 Piece. Autograph Letter Signed. Lee, R(obert) E. San Antonio, Texas, October 12, 1857. 2 pages, 4to, with integral address leaf in Lee's hand, docketed; light creases along old folds, small burn blister and small tears at blank edge of integral address leaf, small tear at blank bottom of letter. To Henry E. Leman [gun manufacturer], Lancaster, Penn(sylvania), "...I regret the difficulty you mention of accommodating the rifle shot barrels to the same stock. My object was to get a good double barrel shot gun, with separate barrels adjusted to the same stock, to avoid unnecessary transportation, which is a matter of importance in the frontier. This was the kind of arm ordered as I understood, by Captain Marcy [later Union General Randolph B. Marcy]. It was the kind he showed me... My wish was to procure a convenient and serviceable arm, not only for myself, but as a model of the kind of gun desirable on the frontier for other officers..." Clear, clean text, strong signature (not affected by creasing or other faults). With 3 cent and cancel stamps on address leaf.
