A beautiful American Bowie knife by Calrenbach and Herder of Philadelphia ca. 1840. An 8" single edge spear point blade with a 2.5" false edge. on a 4.5" finely checkered wooden grip handle with five brass pins. Overall length is 12.5" The blade is stamped "Clarenbach and Herder" on its ricasso and is also stamped "Clarenbach and Herder" with "Philada" half way down the blade. For a similar knife refer to The American Bowie Knife by Norm Flayderman p.321. Condition: In fair to good condition consistent with age and use.
