Beschreibung:

Lionel Nathan Rothschild, ALS, 3pp. New Court, 20 March 1857. Recipient unidentified. Most of the letter is in general terms, although certainly the recipient understood the references. He notes: "I have already received promises of assistance from all quarters, and can confidently say, that I fully expect to have the honor of again being you Representative. Should I be so fortunate, I shall endeavor to have our question introduced into Parliament as soon as possible. The already generally expressed opinion that the next will be a very liberal Parliament is confirmed by the accounts published in the daily papers. If our cause then with increased majorities in the House of Commons be not Successful, I shall not hesitate ?? immediately placing my seat at your disposal....Your Most Obliged Servt, I am Lionel de Rothschild." Lionel Rothschild (1808-1879), banker, politician, philanthropist, was the son of banker Nathan Meyer Rothschild. After attending Gottingen, he entered the family business. As a banker, he loaned large sums to many interests, including the English government during the Crimean War. He declined a loan to Russia, however, because of her treatment of Poland, with its large Jewish population. Rothschild supported many Jewish endeavors, both at home and abroad (especially Jews in Poland, Jerusalem and Russia). He supported schools, hospitals and synagogues, but did not limit his philanthropy to co-religionists. Rothschild was one of the largest donors and fund-raisers to help in the Irish and Scottish potato famines. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1847, as one of four members from London (city). The oath required to be seated in the House required the members to swear "upon the true faith of a Christian," which Rothschild refused to do. The lower house had passed a bill as early as 1830 enabling Jews to be seated after swearing an oath they could conscientiously support, but each time the lower house passed one of these bills, the House of Lords rejected it. Rothschild made it his mission to change Parliament, and that could be the reference in this letter. He was re-elected in 1849, 1854, twice in 1857. In 1858, after ten times rejecting the House of Commons bills, the House of Lords agreed to a bill allowing each house to decide its own oath. Rothschild was sworn in and seated in July 1858, the first Jewish Member of Parliament, after a struggle of 11 years. Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co. Condition: Minor surface soil and handling wear. Overall very good.
