Allan Ramsay (Scottish, 1713-1784) Portrait of Mrs Ralph Freman, three quarter length, wearing a mauve dress, and holding a rose signed lower right "A Ramsay 1750" oil on canvas h:124 w:100 cm Provenance: By descent from the sitter's niece, Catherine Freman, who married the Hon Charles Yorke (1722-1770), second son of Philip, 1st Earl of Hardwicke; married 19th May 1755 Catherine, only child and heir of William Freman of Aspenden Hall, Hertfordshire, by his wife Catherine, daughter of Sir Thomas Pope Blount of Tyttenhanger, Hertfordshire; their granddaughter, who married the 2nd Earl of Caledon, Tyttenhanger Park, Hertfordshire; thence by descent Christie's, London, sale, 3 March 1982, whence acquired by the vendor. Agnes Forester was the daughter of Pulter Forester of Broadfield Hall, Hertfordshire. She married the Reverend Ralph Freman on 12th April 1743. The composition may be compared with Anne Cheape (no.90) and Mary Nisbet (No.403) of 1750, both in the catalogue raisonne. Estimate £15,000-25,000 Relined and cleaned. Christie's stencil mark - C 492. One bump upper left-hand corner. The frame has warped - areas of gilding and gesso on frame are cracked and flaking. Undulations in canvas upper left corner. Painting in good condition. Lined. Varnish is clear, glossy and even. Some surface dirt and accretions on the surface of varnish.
