Allan Martin These Dark Woods/Distance, 2022 Oil on Gessoed Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About I work from photographic references most often changing and montaging elements so a 'place' doesn't exist but is created. Tones can be radically manipulated, it is not my intention to then simply translate this source in the process of painting, I wish to achieve a further shift, something present which is unknown, a finished painting I don't fully understand. Grids are often present in my work, while useful in constructing a painting I also rework, redraw and edit them so traces remain. A continually evolving series 'These Dark Woods' which allows nature to speak of the human condition and more includes these marks which can allude to maps, scales, cross-hairs, crosses and more. @allanmartinartist Education Studied Printed Textile Design at Glasgow School of Art. Self-taught as a painter. Before that worked as a graphic designer, often within the music industry which latterly included collaborative photography with Annie Lennox and many other projects together. Select Exhibitions/Awards Selected for the Royal Academy, ING Discerning Eye, National Open Art Competition. A finalist in Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year. Sixty nine works included in the collection of the Hotel de Crillon, Paris. Work also in the Soho House collections of Babington House and The Farmhouse, private collections in the UK, Ireland, France, USA, Australia, and Chile. Collaborative photographic portraits with Annie Lennox are in the collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork As unusually small works, I decided to explore within the series 'These Dark Woods' - the works are of locations where something unknown has or is about to happen. Message from Art On A Postcard: Please do not bid if you intend to sell on the artwork. All artworks have been generously donated by the artists to raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust and when work is sold on the secondary market, it damages our relationship with the artist and prevents us from fundraising
