Alfred Thompson Bricher (American, 1837-1908) From Narragansett Pier Looking South Toward Point Judith Signed "ATBRICHER" l.l. Oil on canvas, 13 x 33 1/4 in. (33.0 x 84.5 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, craquelure. Provenance: A private Massachusetts collection, possibly acquired from the artist, through the family of Frederick Swan, Springfield, Massachusetts. N.B. Born in 1837, Alfred Thompson Bricher was largely self taught until 1851, when he enrolled in art lessons at Lowell Institute in Boston. He became a professional painter in 1858 as well as a member of the American Water Color Society, the Boston Art Club and an Associate of the National Academy in 1879. His marine scenes were exhibited in the National Academy, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery, among other museums. He became a significant artist of the second-generation Hudson River School landscapists and is considered one of the most important American luminists.
