Aivazovsky, the most prolific Russian artist of his time, nevertheless found time to give classes to his grandson. Under his tutelage and after an extensive German internship, Hanzen became a refined maritime painter. In 1917, Hanzen had his first personal exhibition in Saint Petersburg. After the Revolution, the artist with his family immigrated to Yugoslavia. Yugoslavian and Italian royal families frequently commissioned Hanzen to paint the beautiful Dubrovnik coastline.
