ALEXANDER III -- KOROLENKO, Vladimir Galaktionovich (1853-1921). Ocherki i Razskazy . [Sketches and stories]. Moscow: Kushnerev & Co, 1888. 8° (188 x 137mm). Contemporary black half-morocco (extremities rubbed). Provenance : Grand Duke Aleksandr Aleksandrovich (bookplate, stamp) -- Paul M. Fekula FROM THE LIBRARY OF ALEXANDER III AS TSAREVICH. Korolenko wrote several of these stories while in exile in Siberia and the Viatka province, where he had been sent for his involvement in Populist anti-government protests. Korolenko spent almost a decade of his adult life in exile and prison. In 1881, while working as a cobbler and postman under supervision, he had been moved to a punishment cell in Tobolsk prison for refusing to swear an oath to Alexander III, the future owner of this book. According to Fekula, after returning to European Russia from exile, Korolenko did much for the relief of Ukrainian peasants and aided emigration to America. Fekula 4838 (this copy).
