Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967) The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-1917: a 1p. menu Reids Palace Hotel , Funchal, Madeira 21 August 1914 , 17.5 x 12.5cm., a menu du jour , with the signatures of Worsley, Clark, Marston, Hussey, Greenstreet, Rickinson, Macklin and McIlroy With a printed programme for the reception of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the members of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition held by the British Society in the Argentine Republic (Buenos Aires Branch), 4 October 1916; and a postcard with the signatures of Wild, Marston, Adams, Bickerton, Clark and others within a printed design after Marston, probably a nativity card for 'Wm Forsythe 24 11/16' (inscription at the top) PROVENANCE: Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967), and thence by descent to the present owners. The Funchal menu was either mailed home between Madeira and South Georgia or is a survival from the expedition. Macklin joined the Endurance at Plymouth on 6 August, 1914. She sailed on 8 August, stopping for a few days at Madeira, arriving in Buenos Aires on 7 October. 5 (5)
