ALEC SOTH
ALEC SOTH Sleeping by the Misssissippi [sic]. Minneapolis: by the photographer, c.2002. Folio (280 x 215mm). Photo-illustrated title-page, 43 colour photographs, and colophon illustrated with two photographs, all laser printed. Original spiral binding with clear plastic front cover and black card back cover. THE VERY RARE TRUE FIRST, SELF-PUBLISHED EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE PHOTOBOOKS OF RECENT YEARS. Soth distributed these self-made books to curators, galleries, and Photography opinion- formers, which earned him the Santa Fe Center Award in 2003, and led to the book's eventual mainstream publication. It is one of an unspecified but small number of copies made, probably not exceeding 30, and preceding all other editions: Soth later corrected the spelling mistake in the title ('Misssissipi') and published a new hardcover version in two issues totalling approximately 55 copies. In making his own books Soth, like Shore before him, goes back to the origins of the photobook when photographers made and distributed their own books. Soth has remarked: 'I see them as the ultimate vehicle for showing my work because you can reproduce photos incredibly well in book form, and for me photography isn't about individual images but about the interplay among images -- and that's what you get in a book' (quoted in Minneapolis - St.Paul Star Tribune , 14 December 2007). The Photobook , vol. II, p.50 (reproducing the later, hardcover issue).
