Folio (358 x 230 mm). Engraved title with architectural border, engraved portrait, woodcut illustrations throughout. Modern morocco-backed marbled paper boards, gilt titles to spine. Engraved title repaired and laid down, as is the "Registrum" at end. FIRST EDITION of Aldrovandi's treatise on shellfish, octopi, shells, and jellyfish—one of the earliest works and the largest assembly of conchological illustrations and descriptions to date. Aldrovandi "was among the first to attempt to free the natural sciences from the stifling influence of the authority of textbooks, for which he substituted, as far as possible, direct study and observation of the animal, vegetable, and mineral worlds" (DSB).
