(Photograph Album - Hawaii & Far East) Album with approx. 128 silver photographs recording a voyage to Hawaii, China, Hong Kong and Japan Place Published: No place Date Published: 1898 Description: Most photographs measure approx. 8x8 cm (3¼x3¼"), glued to thick album leaves, many with pencil captions on the leaves. Album measures 18x30 cm (7x11¾"), cloth. Exceptional album of original candid photographs of well-to-do travelers on ship, the "Str. Coptic," and land. Among the party was John J. Valentine, first president of Wells, Fargo & Co., with a photo of him being carried on a palanquin in China. The views include: “ Hawaiian Pineapple fields”, ”Soldiers on the battleship in Honolulu”, “Flag Staff on the peak at Hong Kong”, “Race track in Hong Kong”, "Nagasaki Russian Man-of-war”, “Pile drilling by gang of women”, “Town and Harbor of Matsushima”, Shanghai. There are about 50 photos of Japan, many hand-colored, but none seem to be commercial views. Condition: Normal rubbing to album covers, some images with fading or darkening; very good.
