Title: Album of 59 original albumen photographs of California, Colorado and Utah, including San Francisco's Chinatown Author: Place: Various places Publisher: Date: c.1880-1890 Description: Images approx. 12.5x20.5 cm (5x8") or a bit smaller, captioned in the negative, most with photographers identified. Mounted on both sides of 16 cardstock album leaves (plus a few blank leaves at end). Album measures 34x27 cm (13¼x10¾"), later cloth covers simulating morocco. An exceptional photograph album with a number of rare views as well as famous images of the West in the latter part of the 19th century. 42 of the photographs are of California (12 of San Francisco, 5 more of S.F.'s Chinatown, 14 of Yosemite); 15 are of Colorado; and 2 of Utah. The notable photographs of San Francisco's Chinatown included a Chinese Josh-House; an alley in Chinatown, two of Chinese restaurants; and an enchanting image of "Miss Cable's class of Chinese girls" grouped on the ground and steps in front of the school (this photo with small and unobtrusive tear to image). Other California photographs include bird's-eye views of San Francisco, Sutro Heights and the Cliff House, the Hotel del Monte and other scenes in Monterey, street scenes and hotels in San Francisco, Yosemite and its waterfalls, and more. Most of the California photographs are credited to Isaiah Taber and George Fiske The Colorado scenes include the Garden of the Gods, Windsor Hotel and Tabor Grand Opera House in Denver, Rosemma Falls, Manitou, Castle Gate and more. In Utah there is a panorama of Salt Lake City and the interior of the Mormon Tabernacle. Lot Amendments Condition: Some images with minor and mostly marginal fading, but most in near fine to fine condition, with rich tones. Item number: 283319a
