ALBUM AMICORUM of Johann Nikolaus von DEVENNE. Manuscript on paper and vellum, Germany (Augsburg, Ratisbon), France (Altorf, Paris) and Holland (Amsterdam), 1628-1639, including 11 blazoned coats of arms, three full-page bird's eye views in pen, ink and bodycolour, TWO OF THEM HUNTING MAPS, and one drawing, a few pages pasted in, altogether 144 leaves (including 114 blanks), oblong 8vo (134 x 185mm) , modern pencil foliation (occasional wear and light soiling, a few inscriptions slightly cropped, heavy foxing to f.100, f.111 detached), contemporary gilt-stamped vellum with owner's name ('Ioannis Nicolai a Devenne') on upper cover and date ('Anno 1632') on lower cover (somewhat worn). Provenance : armorial ex-libris and shelfmark (Ms.735) of Rudolf Ritter von Gutmann; shelfmark (Ser.nov. 2975) of Österreichische Nationalbibliothek. The most striking insertions in Devenne's album are two bird's eye hunting maps of the villages and terrain east of Goppingen in Baden-Wurttemberg, on vellum, the settlements numbered with reference to a key panel in top right corner, the first (f.77v) showing two hunting parties, with their arms (identified as 'das gelaidt vem-wirtenberg'), meeting in a tract of country east of Goppingen; the second (f.108) with place-names faded, with, on verso, a series of shields of families of the region. The remaining perspective (f.110v) depicts Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome (faded). Among the coats of arms is a magnificent and unusual example in oils (f.116), the shield supported by two helmeted lions standing on crags protruding from a forest in a broad landscape (slight flaking); the arms in the first and fourth fields are identified as those of Geitzkoffler von Haunsheim. The inscriptions include one by 'Jaroslaus Piere Baron de Kynsky et Tettau', Amsterdam, 13 November 1632; Johann Friedrich Vuorter, who describes himself as poet laureate of Neumarkt, accompanies his inscription with a drawing of Apollo and Daphne (f.36).
