Uniformly decorated with previous work: first two 9-line initials in pink on green ground with gold highlights and scrolling foliate border, historiated initial opening text depicting the annunciation with God the Father and Christ Child above, scrolling foliate extensions, 2- to 8-line initials in red (one in blue), paragraph marks and capital strokes in red. (Small wormholes in final 3 quires, small marginal stain in final quire.) The fresh condition of the present copy shows that the final quire consists of 6 leaves, the final two blank. 2 works in one volume, royal 2° (377 x 265mm). 16th-century roll-tooled pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, later spine label (cornerpieces and clasps missing, few scuff marks). FIRST EDITION of De laudibus Mariae and FIRST OR SECOND EDITION of the Mariale . Although spurious, both works were transmitted under the name of Albertus Magnus, who indeed is cited here in print as the author of the Mariale . De laudibus Mariae has only in the last century been identified as the work of the 13th-century Paris theologian, Richardus de Sancto Laurentio. The two works were apparently issued together: they share formats and often survive bound together, as here. An edition of the Mariale , based on an independent manuscript, was printed by Zel at Cologne, a copy of which at Uppsala bears an inscription dated 1473.
