Armitage was described by Sir Clements Markham as possessing "one of the soundest judgements I ever met with". He was selected as second in command and navigator of the National Antarctic Expedition along with Dr. Reginald Koettlitz (1860-1914), after having served on the Jackson-Harmsworth expedition to Franz-Josef land in 1894-97. During the expedition Armitage was the first to explore the ice caps and the polar plateau of South Victoria Land.
