AFTER THE ANTIQUE, A LARGE GRAND TOUR BRONZE FIGURE OF THE PRAYING BOY 19TH CENTURY The figure with arms upraised, on plinth base 141cm high, base 32 x 32.5cm The original Hellenistic bronze this figure is based upon was discovered in part in the 15th century in excavations on the island of Rhodes. Over the course of 500 years it has undergone numerous repairs and restorations including being reunited with its left leg in the 16th century and with arms added in the 17th century. Passing through various collections it is now held in the Altes Museum, Berlin. It has been suggested that this might be the statue of a praying boy described in Pliny's Natural History as 'Adorans' and attributed to Boidas, one of the sons of the sculptor Lysippos.
