After Ballin: A pair of fine bronze urns cast by Luppens
late 19th century the base with founders stamp H Luppens and Ci, bronzes d~art, bruxelles mid brown patination 60cm.; 23½ins high This pair of bronze urns are copies of originals believed to have been cast by Duval from designs by Louis XIV goldsmith, Claude Ballin which remain today on the short marble plinths separating the Par deux of Versailles, copies were made for the fouth marquis of Hartford 1800-1867 who through his friendship with Napoleon III was allowed to make bronze copies of the originals for his estate, Bagatelle in the Par du Bologne. H Luppens based in Brussels operating in the later half of the 19th century were renowned for the high quality of their casting, chiseling and finishing as is apparent on this pair of urns. They cast a number of sculptors work including that of Egide Rombaux
