Album relating to Augustus Sparhawk of Boston, containing approximately 145 albumen prints of various sizes (largest 5½ x 8 inches), c.1879, ink and pencil captions pasted below, the prints and captions removed from an earlier album and remounted with occasional damage to prints, oblong folio, disbound. In 1874, when Stanley was preparing for his Trans-African Expedition in Zanzibar, he stayed with Sparhawk, then the Zanzibar agent of the Salem firm John Bertram & Co. Stanley's next expedition, in 1879, would aim to open up the Congo River. He headed to Zanzibar to enlist his friends there, including Sparhawk, before continuing to the mouth of the Congo. Sparhawk was put in charge of supplies and was ultimately made chief of the station at Vivi, 110 miles inland. The present album covers Sparhawk's experiences on the Congo and his life in Zanzibar where he may have been the US Consul. The first half includes images of "house erected for Expedition at Banana Point," the mouth of the Congo, which Stanley reached in August 1879; several Dutch factories; "factory hands in holiday dress"; Congo chiefs (4); Punta da Lenha, 60 miles up the Congo; "Congo hippo hunt"; Boma, 70 miles up (5 views); Vista "where we had the fight and I took the Fetish"; Island of St. Thomas, and St. Paul de Loanda (5); American Mission at Gabon (4); Count de Brazza, the French explorer; native "types" (13), one with fetish; and "Mayumbas showing native tattooes." The Zanzibar half includes the following: "part of our house"; general views; German, American, British (2) and French (2) consulates; English Mission House; Stanley himself (3); the famous merchant "prince" Taria Topan, his family, and homes; the Sultan's palace; several native dignitaries and "types"; "Stanley and his Zanzibaries taken at Cape Town after his trip Across the Dark Continent"; crew of H.M.S. Vulture; the new Sultan; Sparhawk "in Arab costume"; letter of compliments from the Sultan, in Arabic, 1869; dinner invitation from the second Sultan, addressed to Sparhawk as US Consul.
