Africa.- Churchill (Lord Randolph Spencer).- Burton (Sir Richard F.) The Lake Regions of Central Africa, 2 vol., first edition, half-titles, folding engraved map with partial hand-colouring, 12 chromoxylograph plates, wood-engraved illustrations, light foxing to verso of some plates, inscribed and dated by Randolph Spencer Churchill, contemporary blue calf, gilt, spine a little faded, [Penzer pp.63-66, Hosken p.34], 8vo, 1860. ⁂ Inscribed "[?Suisdale], From his affectionate friend Randolph Spencer Churchill upon his leaving Eton. Election 1864" An Account of the Royal Geographical Society expedition with John Hanning Speke in search of the source of the Nile in 1858-59. After Burton fell ill, Speke carried on without him, as he did not believe that their location was the source. He was the first European to discover what he named Lake Victoria, and claimed it to be the source but Burton disputed it, leading to a long-running and bitter feud between them (see also lot 53).
