Beschreibung:

Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman HARDY (1769-1839) Document signed, Admiralty [London], 1 December 1830, printed with manuscript insertions, on vellum, one membrane, 295 x 320 mm, papered seal. Appointing Richard Longfield Davie a commander in the Fleet; Sir William BEATTY (1773-1842, surgeon on the Victory at Trafalgar). Autograph letter signed to Messrs Cadell and Davies, Torbay, 15 December, n.y. [1806], 2 pages, 4to, integral address leaf (traces of guard). Giving his reasons for deciding to publish his narrative of the death of Lord Nelson separately from the biography being written by Clark and McArthur; Cuthbert, 1st Baron COLLINGWOOD (1750-1810). Letter signed to [William] Marsden, ' Queen off Carthagena', 3 December 1803, one page, 4to (trimmed at left hand edge touching addressee's name, small split in blank margin). Acknowledging an order to take the Acasta under his command; and Frances, Viscountess NELSON (1758-1831). Autograph letter signed ('Frances H[erbert] Nelson & Bronte') to Edward Hawke Locker Exm[outh], 31 August 1812, integral address panel (to Locker on 'HMS Culloden Mediterranean'), 3 pages, 4to (laid down, seal tear, old professional repairs), asking a favour. Fanny Nelson intervenes on behalf of 'a relation of my late Lord's, Mr William Rolfe Mid[shipman] on board HMS Elizabeth', to whom she has sent a letter for Sir Edward Pellew, pointing out that Nelson himself wrote to Lord Melville about his promotion. 'It is past belief that only one relation in the Navy of The Hero should be sent to the Medi[terranean] for promotion'. Edward Hawke Locker (1777-1849), son of William Locker under whom Nelson served in 1777 and whom he held in great affection, was civil secretary to Sir Edward Pellew (later Viscount Exmouth) from 1804 to 1814, then Secretary to Greenwich Hospital. William Rolfe was the son of a first cousin to Nelson on his father's side. (4)
