31.75" etched blade with presentation To Henry Corbin, Adjutant General United States Army from the 24th Infantry Club. Presentation grade field and staff sword. Ornate gold bullion officer's belt with brass buckle with gold patriotic eagle with three quarter laurel wreath. Ca 1935 officer's cap with gold bullion eagle and two gold bullion bands with central silk sky blue hat band. Leather visor with gold bullion oak leaves. Plus, two countersigned documents by H.C.Corbin First is a promotion of Garrison McCaskey to First Lieutenant on April 14th 1900 signed by W. McKinley The second document is a promotion of George R. Armstrong to First Lieutenant of the Infantry on December 26, 1902 signed by Theodore Roosevelt. H.C. Corbin was a Major in the Civil War in charge of the 14th U.S. Colored Infantry. At Grant's funeral he oversaw the 70,000 soldiers in attendance. He was a Secretary to the Sitting Bull commission and trials. Corbin had various meetings with the Nez Perce Indians. He was with President Garfield at the train station in Washington, D.C. when the President was shot. Afterwards he was at President Garfield's bedside at the time of his actual death. This sword was presented by Buffalo Soldiers of the 24th Infantry which Corbin was involved with during the Indian War period. General Corbin was one of the highest regarded officials to President McKinley on the daily affairs of the Spanish-American War. He met with President McKinley frequently in the late hours of the day to review war strategy. (See Gun Report, Dec. 1999, pp 26-29.) This lot also includes 5 folio books with meantion of General Corbin, including the following titles Leslie's Official History of the Spanish-American War, 1899, PLUS two volume set of Harper's Pictorial History of the War With Spain, 1899, PLUS Pictorial Atlas Illustrating the Spanish-American War..., 1898, J.W. Iliff & Co., Chicago, PLUS The Official and Pictorial Record of the Story of American Expansion..., 1904, Vol. II only, AND a large group of photocopied governmental and military records on Corbin. Condition: Belt and hat are mint. Sword blade has been lightly cleaned. Brass has nicely tarnished to a rich patina. Scabbard still retains all of the nickel finish and the brass fittings have a nice dark patinated look. Books are all somewhat rough condition.
