Adams") as President, to Secretary of the Treasury Richard Rush (1780-1859) in Washington; Quincy [Mass.], 5 September 1826. 1 full page, 4to, verso with Rush's docket "The President." In very fine condition. NATIONAL REVENUE PROJECTIONS AND THE TEN-MILLION-DOLLAR NATIONAL DEBT. The President, enjoying a visit to Quincy during a recess of Congress, acknowledges receipt of several letters from Rush including a favorable report on the nation's revenue projections: "I am rejoiced to find that the prospects of the Revenue for the present year, encourage the expectation that there will be no deficiency to retrench upon the annual appropriation of ten Millions to the discharge of the principal and interest of the Public Debt. My apprehension however has been that the deficiency would be more considerable the next than the present year; and I very cordially congratulate you...upon the accuracy of your fiscal anticipations." Adams explains his response to the petition of a British merchant vessel seized by the customs: "I return...the Papers relating to the case of the British Brig Irene, William Currie Master, with the following endorsement on his Petition. 'Upon the Report of the Collector of the Customs at Perth-Amboy...I decline interfering in this case--of which let the Petitioner be informed...'" He adds that he has "received anonymous complaints against Captain Matthews, Commander of the Revenue Cutter at Charleston, S.C. who is charged with wasting his won time as misusing the Vessel."
