No copies of the present hand-coloured issue of this work are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty years. Victor Adam a highly accomplished French artist and lithographer, here chronicles the course of a classic Spanish bull-fight from the entrance of the bull into the ring, to the removal of the dead bull by a team of three horses. As well as being a colour-plate work of the highest quality, this series also ranks alongside the works of Goya and Picasso as a record of the pathos, drama and pageantry of the bull-ring. Each plate is beautifully observed and very finely hand-coloured with touches of gum Arabic where necessary. Each has an integral decorative border which includes the caption in French and Spanish and is carefully tinted by hand. This work was issued in two formats: the regular uncoloured issue (for which there is one auction record in 1978) and the de luxe coloured issue (as here, of which no copies are listed as having sold at auction). Neither format require either title or text, with the title being taken from the upper cover of the wrappers in which the plates were issued, as noted in the Bulletin Mensuel de la Librairie Damascene Morgand (number 28, for November 1880), see item number 18412. "Combat du Taureau. Douze sujets dessinés d'après nature par Victor Adam Paris, Bulla, s. d. … Titre collé sur le cartonnage original.". Not listed by OCLC. Damascene Morgand 18412; Palau 2598.
