Steele crossed the plains in 1850, following the California Trail and crossed the Sierra Nevada by way of the Truckee River and Donner Pass, arriving in Nevada City on September 23, where he began to search for gold. Installments of this journal first appeared in 1901 in the Lodi Valley News. Mattes calls the book "one of the great overland classics."
