The iconic engraving on a sheet pulled over a 24" x 30" stretcher, with visible plate depression 15-15/16" x 20-13/16", matted and framed, 28" x 34.75" overall. William Edgar Marshall (1837-1906) was an American engraver famous for his portraits of famous figures, especially Washington, Lincoln and Jesus Christ. The Architect of the Capitol's website identifies this likeness as being completed in 1866, based on a Marshall painting of the president which itself was based on a photograph. Condition: The engraving is in very good condition. There is significant foxing in the margins of the engraving, outside the plate marks and obscured in the photograph by the mat. The original wood and gesso frame shows the expected wear.
