Aaron Douglas did a number of portraits in oil of African figures in the late 1940s and early 1950s, including the dignitaries Eket of Nigeria and Nyo Banog of Uganda in 1948 which he painted in Paris. Later in the summer of 1956, Douglas and his wife Alta toured West Africa with their friends the Goens. Earle pp. 220-21.
