It turned out he was joking but then felt rather obliged to take me. I met him and his wife and a young friend at the Parthenon in Athens. We caught a boat to Syria and drove down through Aleppo and Damascus where I decided to stay. I got buses all over the country, including to Palmyra and then down into Jordan, Israel, Sinai and Egypt. Then a boat to Rhodes, and home from there. I bought most of the Syrian clothing in my collection in the souks in Aleppo and Damascus where the young friend with us left to return home and brought the embroideries with him.
