Winchester 1895 lever action rifle. Made 1898. Left side of the frame is marked with patent dates in 2 lines. Left side of the barrel is marked " NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER". "30 U.S." marked chamber. "WINCHESTER/MODEL 1895" marked on the top tang. Round steel barrel with pedestal blade front sight. Replacement buck horn style rear sight. Factory blued finish on the metal components worn to an even brown patina. The left side of the receiver has an extra hole in it, presumably for a rear peep. Stock has been sanded and varnished. Crescent metal butt plate. Cody research indicates serial number application on December 17th, 1898 as a .30 caliber 1895 rifle, received in warehouse on December 28th, 1898, and then shipped May 4th, 1899 as part of Order 27469. CONDITION: Metal retains 50% of its original finish with most areas forming a brown patina. Stock is very good with a few handling marks and scratches. Bore is frosted with good overall rifling. Mechanically fine.
