A WILLIAM IV POCKET GLOBE BY LANE, CIRCA 1835 The cartouche LANEs Improved GLOBE LONDON , made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours, the meridian of Greenwich ungraduated, the meridian at 135°W graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in twelve times 1-30° for the houses of the Zodiac, with sigils, the oceans showing the tracks of Cooke and Anson with various notes, the continents coloured and shaded in yellow, red and green and showing place names and rivers, Australia labelled NEW HOLLAND , North Africa showing NEGROLAND and South Africa COUNTRY OF THE CAFRES , Canada with no northern coastline, Antarctica showing some small stretches of partial coastline including Enderbys Land 1833 , with two iron axis pins, in a spherical fishskin-covered wooden case, the interior laid with two sets of twelve hand-coloured engraved celestial half-gores laid to the celestial poles, with graduated equatorial and ecliptic, the latter with twilight zone, the stars to various orders of magnitude and the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and scientific instruments, the case edges lined in red, with three brass hooks and eyes 3 in. (7.5 cm.) diameter
