Whitridge Date: 1748 Description: xviii, 336 pp. With 9 engraved plates, 5 of them folding; engraved folding map. (8vo) 19.5x11 cm (7¾x4¼"), period calf, spine tooled in gilt, raised bands, morocco lettering piece. First Edition. Ellis was the surveyor on this important expedition (financed by private subscription) which "proved, finally, the nonexistence of a Northwest Passage from Hudson Bay" (Hill). The folding maps is: ':A New Chart of the parts where a North West Passage was sought in the years 1746 and 1747. Exhibiting the tracks of the ships throughout that expedition by Henry Ellis." Ink ownership signature of Sir Baldwin Leighton, 1819, on front pastedown.
