A VICTORIAN MAHOGANY TWO-DAY MARINE CHRONOMETER WITH STAPLE BALANCE EDWARD DENT, LONDON. NO. 1803. MID 19TH CENTURY BOX: three-tier with brass drop-down side handles, enamel cartouche to the front inscribed 'DENT/1803', hand written label pasted to the top inscribed 'CAPTN./THE HON: W.C. TALBOT/H.M.S. STEADY Favoured by J.E. Knight Esq. RN.', thermometer to lid alongside Dent trade label, brass gimbal and bowl numbered '1803' and stamped 'DENT', convex glass to brass bezel; box key -- 155 mm. square DIAL: silvered and engraved, signed 'DENT, LONDON/Chronometer Maker to the/QUEEN No. 1803', 56-hour state up/down and subsidiary seconds, blued steel hands -- 100 mm. diameter MOVEMENT: with spot-finished plates, maintaining power to the single chain fusee; original numbered brass tipsy winding key ESCAPEMENT: with blued steel helical spring, diamond endstone to Dent's blued steel and brass staple balance, Earnshaw-type spring detent with jewelled locking stone
