The movement and dial by Claudius De Chesne, London, circa 1715, now in a later custom made case The first arched brass dial measuring 11.75 inches by 8.25 inches and set with four subsidiary dials for rise and fall regulation, days of the week with diety symbol, strike/silent (in French) with date, and month (with number of days) over the Roman and Arabic chapter ring with lozenge half quarter marks enclosing a finely matted centre with typical straight-ended mock pendulum aperture, the upper pair of spandrels depicting Diana in a medallion, the lower pair depicting Chronos under a sandglass, secured by four dial feet to the substantial triple fusee movement with verge escapement striking the hours on a single bell and chiming the quarters on a nest of six bells and hammers, to the rear of the movement is fixed the second dial. The second dial measures 12.25 inches by 8.25 inches and is set to the upper section with a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with lozenge half hour marks and inner track showing age of two lunar revolutions (1 to 59) and set with an aperture showing phases of the moon, all apparently supported by the seated figure of Chronos, his plinth signed Claudius Du Chesne, London and set within engraved scrolls and the engraved figures of Diana and another in Phrygian bonnet Now contained in a later custom-made mahogany case. 58cm (23ins)
