A VERY RARE BEIJING ENAMEL "EUROPEAN SUBJECT" SNUFF BOTTLE IMPERIAL, PALACE WORKSHOPS, BEIJING, QIANLONG FOUR-CHARACTER MARK IN BLUE ENAMEL AND OF THE PERIOD, 1736-1760 Of compressed form with flat lip and recessed flat foot surrounded by a footrim, the four sides each with a rounded-rectangular panel framed in metal, the two main sides each with a European lady, one in a puce-colored dress with white edging, fluttering blue shawl and white cap posed with her left fingers to her chest, the other wearing a blue dress and puce shawl, holding a blossom matching those in the hair of each woman, each portrait set against a background of stippled yellow-green trees and sky, the narrow sides painted in puce enamels with narrow oblong panels of European villages, all reserved on a mille fleurs ground, additionally ornamented at the neck with a band of pendent lingzhi and leaf-tips and above the foot with a band of blue dots alternating with C-scrolls, the turquoise-blue-enameled base with four-character mark in blue enamel, Qianlong nian zhi (Made in the Qianlong period), the exposed metal gilt, gilt-metal stopper with integral collar 1 27/32 in. (4.7 cm.) high
