A VERY FINE GUJERAT MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID CASKET of rectangular form with hinged gabled cover, the exterior inlaid with mother-of-pearl on a black composition ground forming dense leafy vine around ogival panels of leaves linked by small palmettes containing large well-detailed palmettes, the panels outlined with plain stripes, the lid with a border of floral lozenges, the pierced and engraved gilt-copper hinge and lock plates very finely worked with scrolling palmette vine and perching birds, 17th century (negligible loss to inlay), later ebony base and blue plush interior 7 7/8 x 13¼ x 7¾in. (20 x 33.7 x 19.7cm.)
