A U.S. ARMY "FORTY ROUNDS," FLAG OF THE 2ND BRIGADE, THIRD DIVISION, 15TH CORP OF THE ARMY OF THE TENNESSEE 1865.Machine-sewn wool swallow tail flag with linen fringe trim, with painted insignia "Forty Rounds" over cartridge box to center of obverse and reverse, 46.5 x 62 inches, some wear to field, trim darkened.
Provenance: Made under open market agreement with Horstmann Bros. & Co. of Philadelphia, May 1865; paraded at the Grand Review of the Armies of the U.S., May 24-26, 1865; retained as a memento of service by Colonel John Eaton Tourtellotte (1833-1891) commanding 4th Minnesota Infantry, 1865; by descent in the Tourtellotte Family; acquired by Tim Prize from the descendants of Colonel John Eaton Tourtellotte; acquired by Howard Madaus from Tim Prize, 2004; acquired by the Zaricor Flag Collection from the Madaus Flag Collection, 2004.
FORMERLY IN THE HOWARD MADUS COLLECTION.
This is an American Civil War Union designation flag from the 2nd Brigade, Third Division, 15th Corps of the Army of the Tennessee. The "Forty Rounds" insignia for the XV corps originated when the Western XV met up with the Eastern XII corps, the latter sporting crescent and star-shaped badges so elegant that a member of the XV wondered if they were all generals. When asked what the insignia of the XV was, an Irishman slapped his cartridge belt and replied, "Forty rounds in the cartridge box! And twenty in the pocket!" When the story reached the ears of General Logan, he sent a circular to his men declaring that "The following is announced as the badge of this corps: A miniature cartridge box, black, set transversely on a field of cloth or metal: above the cartridge box plate will be stamped or marked in a curve, the motto 'Forty Rounds.'"
This Flag was made under an open market agreement with Horstmann Brothers & Co. of Philadelphia of 2 May 1865, and was utilized in the Grand Review of the Armies of the United States in Washington D.C. on 24-25 May 1865. It conforms to General Orders from the Headquarters of the 15th Army Corps, dated April 1865, and also matches the other two surviving Brigade flags now in the collections of the U.S. Army Department of Military History in Washington D.C.
The XV corps is one of the most storied of the Civil War, serving first under Sherman in the siege of Vicksburg and Logan in the Atlanta campaign. Brevet Brigadier General John Eaton Tourtellotte (1833-1891) served at the Battle of Vicksburg and let his troops to victory at the Battle of Allatoona, despite a 3-to-1 advantage held by the Confederate Army. During this battle he was wounded in the hip but continued to lead from an ambulance rather than leave the field.
