India, 19th/ 20th Centurystanding on four hooved feet, the rider carrying a sword and shield, the saddle and textiles decorated in repoussé and chasing with Kutch style floral, foliate and scrolling vine designs, the reins of twisted wire, the sides with suspension rings hung with bells

Camels were popular as Orientalist decorative motifs in Victorian and Edwardian Britain, as evidenced by the camel-inspired centrepieces and testimonial silver pieces made by British firms like Elkington & Co.; the present lot may have been intended for the British domestic market. For an example of designs for testimonial silver pieces featuring camels with palm trees, see Wynard Wilkinson, 'Testimonial Plate: Swashbuckling Silver,' in Delight in Design: Indian Silver for the Raj, ed.
