MUROMACHI PERIOD (LATE 14TH-EARLY 15TH CENTURY), SIGNED KANETAKA
A Shinto Tanto in Mounts with a Nanban Design Muromachi period (late 14th-early 15th century), signed Kanetaka Hira-zukuri, iori-mune configuration and forged with a tight itame pattern mixed with mokume with a notare gunome-midare tempered edge of nie and a ko-maru tip; bo-hi carved on both sides; tang ubu and katte-sagari file marks with one hole; silver habaki ; in shirasaya ; 9 7/8in. (25.1cm.) long 19th-century koshirae comprising a red-lacquer saya decorated with a group of Portuguese sailors and friars watching as a sailing ship departs in gold, silver and black hiramaki-e, fundame and kinpun , the hardware silver and comprising a kojiri carved with crashing waves, a koiguchi carved with chrysanthemums and kozuka-kogai set carved with waves; silver kuri-gata cast as a Chinese lion head with a ring to hold the sageo ; tsuka wrapped with black leather and fitted with silver fuchi-gashira carved with chrysanthemums and gilt-silver peony menuki (2)
