Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine converted to .50-70 centerfire cartridge. The U.S. Ordnance Department contracted with Sharps Rifle Company in 1867 to modify over 30,000 Civil War era percussion carbines to .50-70 center fire These carbines were issued to regular cavalry regiments on the Western frontier and remained in service until replaced by Springfield Model 1873 Carbines. Blued barrel with case hardened barrel band, frame, loading lever and buttplate. Two piece plain straight grain walnut stock and forearm. Carbine style steel buttplate. 22" round barrel with standard rear folding leaf and small blade front sights. Saddle ring with bar mounted to left side of frame and stock. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel and frame are mostly grey/brown patina. Wood shows moderate to heavy wear, has been lightly sanded. Stock has a 2" repair on right side and a 3/8" repair on left side. Forearm shows only modest wear, and may be a replacement. Bore is very dark and heavily pitted.
