A SET OF FOUR CHARLES II EBONISED AND GILT JAPANNED ARMCHAIRS CIRCA 1680 The cane filled backs in moulded frames decorated with birds on flowering branches and with pagodas, supported by turned baluster columns headed by an arched pierced foliate and C-scroll carved toprail, the cane filled seats flanked by moulded outscrolled armrests on scrolled cabriole legs joined by pierced arch, C-scrolled craved front stretcher and turned H-stretchers 142cm high x 62cm wide x 43cm depth Provenance: The Messel family collection at 104 Lancaster Gate Removed to the Sitting Room at Holmstead Manor and thence by descent to Oliver Messel Purchased from Oliver Messel by Frederick and Phyllis Baden Watkins for Flaxley Abbey Condition Report: Overall scratches, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use. The chairs are later painted and decorated. There are losses, observations and restorations including: there are later elements sometimes all of a section or an inset part to all of these chairs including turned sections, seat rails, carved stretchers, spliced leg end, etc; there is a metal brace; some canework panels are sagging, one canework seat torn along the front seat rail; there is movement in some joints; the later paintwork is flaking, worn, has been applied over some of the canework; there is ample evidence of worm with visible damage to the crest of one chair in particular and the turned back support of another chair; in their current condition these chairs could not be used as seating. The red and gold damask cushions are aged, worn and torn and have a hessian type underside, there is one very worn silk velvet cushion.
