A sculpted white marble planter in the manner of a 1st/ 2nd century AD Roman altar, 20th century, the everted rim above a waisted and fluted band, the lobed underside supported on the spread wings of three adorsed monopodial lions, around a central spiral carved supporting column, the triform base with waisted sides, 112cm high, 100cm diameter The planter offered in this lot is almost identical but for the stem, to a basin altar excavated at Hadrian's Villa in Rome and previously held in the collection of Thomas Barrett The Roman original has a foliate carved stem rather than a twist carved stem, as well as having a rectangular base with a figural frieze Cf Luigi Ficacci, Piranesi, the Complete Etchings, Taschen, 2001, p 602, fig. 761
