A SAFAVID ENGRAVED BRASS TORCHSTAND ( SHAMDAN ) IRAN, 17TH CENTURY Rising from short splayed foot to slightly tapering shaft with three pronounced rings and flaring mouth with slightly everted rim, engraved with bands of scrolling floral vine, arabesques and bands containing verses in nasta'liq , the two middle sections with diagonal fluting, strapwork band around the base of the foot, two later attached handles, later fitted wooden base 13½in. (34.3cm.) high
