A Royal Marriage invitation for the wedding of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi to Princess Fawzia Faud of Egypt, printed in Farsi, accompanied by a royal manuscript firman invitation [probably Tehran, Iran, dated 2nd Ordibehesht 1318 (23 April 1939)] comprising (i) a 4pp. printed wedding invitation with photos of the royal bride and groom, interleaved sheets of coloured tissue paper, upper cover a little browned else excellent condition, 260 x205mm., with original envelope; (ii) a single sheet, manuscript firman of the wedding invitation with royal seal, three lines black nasta'liq, royal signature in gold, c. 530 x 350mm., also with original accompanying envelope A rare ephemeral item issued by the Iranian Ministry of Culture on behalf of the Royal Pahlavi household from Shah Mohammad Reza's first wedding. The wedding was intended to strengthen the ties betwen the Iranian and Egyptian courts, and attracted controversy as it united a Sunni royal Princess with a Shi'a royal Crown Prince. This invitation here was for the ceremony held in Iran, although there was an earlier reception in Cairo on the 15 March. The couple had a daughter together, Princess Shahnaz Pahlavi, before they became estranged and eventually divorced in 1948.
