A Regency mahogany, ebonised moulded and ebonised line-inlaid serving table or sideboard1805-1810, of bowed breakfront outline, the raised top above a projecting carved acanthus and ebonised moulded edge, over an interlaced ebonised tablet frieze incorporating two short oak-lined drawers and interspersed with lion mask angles, on four reeded tapering legs each with a conforming acanthus carved collar, terminating in lotus-leaf capped disc-and-ball feet, 255cm wide x 68cm deep x 92cm high, (100in wide x 26 1/2in deep x 36in high)FootnotesThe present lot relates to two designs for sideboards or serving tables, both dated 1804. The first design is by George Smith and appears in his 1808 publication, Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, pl. 92. This drawing also features in J. Harris Regency Furniture Designs, 1803-1826, 1961, London, fig. 136. The Smith table has similar carved lion mask block angles and reeded tapering legs to the above. The other comparable design by Thomas Sheraton was published in his Encyclopaedia, 1804-1808, pl. 32 and likewise again in J. Harris Ibid, fig. 18. This Sheraton sideboard also has closely related lion mask carving and reeded tapering legs.
