A red-and-black-lacquer tonkotsu and wood two-case inro By Jack Coutu (1924-2017), English, carved October 1991, July and December 1993 (nos.203, 229 and 233) and February-March 1996 (no.256) The tonkotsu applied in silver with an ichthyosaur fossil, the reverse with a fossilised plant, 6.5cm (2½in) high, the netsuke of red-and-black-lacquered in the form of a partially decayed apple with a wasp, the eyes inlaid, signed JC, 3.6cm (1 3/8in), the ojime with a red-and-black-lacquer abstract design, signed JC, with a lacquer fitted storage box decorated with fossils by the artist; the inro with decoration painted in Indian ink, the front depicting a flying owl, the reverse with a fledgling resting beneath eaves, signed JC, 6cm (2 3/8in) high; with the artist's reference cards for the tonkotsu, storage box, netsuke and inro.
