Unsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A very unusual carving of a long-armed Tenaga, the yokai here depicted in a ghostly manner with emaciated rib cage and distended stomach. The egg-shaped head is turned to the right, the mouth agape, the scalp with sparsely incised hair. The carver has imbued a remarkable amount of movement into the carving. The long arms are swinging in opposite directions, the body slightly contorted as a result, one arm lifting the hem of the well-carved skirt. Natural himotoshi through the opening between the body and left arm. The wood of a fine dark color, the grain beautifully highlighted. HEIGHT 10.7 cm Condition: Very good condition, beautiful patina. One foot is re-attached. Provenance: Ex-collection Teddy Hahn, Darmstadt.
