Number 5 Gun went to France in December 1915 and saw service throughout the campaign on the Somme and in the Flanders offensive. During the retreat after the battle of Messines in April 1918, No. 5 Gun became bogged in a sunken road and had to be abandoned, the breech being salved and the gun blown up. Only 11 D.C.M's awarded to the R.M.A. during the Great War.
