A RARE INSIDE-PAINTED ROCK CRYSTAL SNUFF BOTTLE MA SHAOXUAN (1867-1939), BEIJING, PROBABLY 1905 Of flattened, rounded rectangular form, the well-hollowed bottle is finely painted on one main side with a grouping of inscribed paper items, including paintings, a fan dated 1905, rubbings, and calligraphy. The reverse is inscribed with an excerpt from the 'Lanting Preface' preceded by a dedicatory line which may be translated as 'made for the elder brother Fuchen' and followed by the signature Ma Shaoxuan, and a seal reading Shaoxuan. 2 9/16 in. (6.5 cm.) high, hardstone stopper
