A RARE GILT-BRONZE VOTIVE STELE OF AVALOKITESVARA NORTHERN WEI DYNASTY The bodhisattva shown standing before a petal-shaped aureole cast with flames on a lotus base raised atop a bracketed plinth, with right hand held in abhayamudra , wearing long beaded chains joined by a ring at the waist of the layered robes and looped scarves which flare stiffly out to the sides, with broad ribbons cascading to the shoulders from the flower-decorated tripartite crown, the reverse cast in relief with Buddha Sakyamuni and Buddha Prabhutaratna seated side by side on a large lotus flanked by smaller lotus supporting two acolytes, all raised on conjoined foliate branches, the figures protected by an elaborate canopy surmounted by a stupa and banners with two pairs of figures peering over the edge, all within a border of punched rings, with partial remains of an inscription on the back of the stand, wear to gilding, with extensive ferrous oxide encrustation, one leg of stand repaired--9¼in. (23.5cm.) high
